LEGO has been around for a long time with around 600 billion LEGO parts produced to date and it is still one of the most popular things on any kids Christmas or Birthday wish list. Over the past few years the demand for city type LEGO sets have increased. Kids are loving the idea of building and playing with toys that represent real life examples and the kind of adventures they are able to take part in with their family and friends. As with all LEGO sets, instructions are included but the compatibility of LEGO city sets allows kids to get creative and redesign and rebuild their LEGO any way they prefer. Here is our take on 5 of the most popular “city” inspired LEGO sets for kids.
If you’re after a completely functional LEGO train set then the LEGO High Speed Passenger Train is exactly what you need. The main train is 4” high, 10” long and 1” wide consisting of 610 pieces. Boys and girls aged 6 to 12 years will love this set. The motorised locomotive passenger train is operated by an 8-channel, 7-speed infrared remote control.
The set includes three minifigures (train driver, passenger, cyclist), small platform with seats, map of train services, lights, crossing and a warning sign. Curved rail tracks are included to complete a circular track but if you prefer the set can be expanded using the compatible Flexible Tracks and Switch Tracks. At around $145 this set is great value.
Every LEGO enthusiast or beginner, young or old, must have a police station in his or her collection. The LEGO City Police station includes 894 pieces and is suitable for boys and girls aged between 6 and 12. This product is part of LEGO’s popular City building sets and is able to build a 3 tiered Police Station featuring a helicopter, police car, police motorbike, criminal’s truck with cherry picker and watch tower.
There is even a jail cell with a really cool exploding wall function. The seven LEGO figures include four police officers, three criminals plus a police dog. For about $99 this compatible City set is a great addition or starting point for anyone.
Who doesn’t love a walk in the park, and now your LEGO minifigures can take a break from busy city life and enjoy this too with the LEGO City Town Fun in the Park - City People Pack. This set is made up of 157 colourful fun pieces and suitable for boys and girls aged between 5 and 12 years.
The LEGO lover will enjoy building and playing with the spinning merry-go-round, park bench, baby stroller, picnic table, wheelchair, hot dog cart, lawnmower, 14 LEGO City minifigures and more. This set is compatible with all other LEGO City sets and at around $44 you can’t go wrong.
The LEGO City Fire Station is yet another fantastic and compatible set as part of the City series. At 919 pieces this set is suitable for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12. The set builds a fully working fire station with fire engine truck and helicopter both jam packed with firefighting gear to keep the rest of your LEGO City safe.
The set includes four male firefighters, one female firefighter, a dog and a hot dog stand person. The station itself stands at around 12” high and 16” wide and also features tools, computer, furniture, flames and plenty of playability. This set can be purchased for around $90.
The LEGO City Town Square Building Kit is a great addition to a growing LEGO collection. Being one of the larger sets we review in this article (1683 pieces) it may come as a surprise as it is still suitable for ages 6 to 12. If you have room for this set it will build out a significant area of space in your City.
Included are many features you’d expect to see in a city including tram, car dealership, three cars, pizza delivery scooter, tow truck, hot dog stand, tram stop, news stand and coffee shop. LEGO has also very cleverly included its own LEGO shop and delivery shop. For around $185 this is great value.
