Many James Bond fans argue that Goldfinger is the best James Bond movie. From the opening scene where Agent 007 destroys a drug laboratory to the last-minute escape from Goldfinger, the movie has all the elements of the Bond formula that has people glued to the franchise.
Part of what makes the Bond films so enthralling are the fast cars, cool gadgets that are years ahead of their time (passenger ejector seat, wristwatch lasers), and the adrenaline-charged scenes where we see James Bond maneuvering cars at great speed. At some point, we all wished for a car with all those innovative technologies. But while we can't own a car with all those features in real life, we can get a good replica of it and spend our time building it from the ground up.
LEGO has recently unveiled the new Creator Expert James Bond Aston Martin DB5, a replica model of the now-iconic 1964 sports car that James Bond used in the Goldfinger movie. The LEGO set features 1,290 pieces and comes with functioning gadgetry.
The James Bond Aston Martin DB5 set is part of the LEGO Creator line, so it is larger in size compared with other sets that are minifigure-scaled. The increased size of the set allowed LEGO designers to incorporate intricate details and signature James Bond gadgets that are hidden away inside the replica. The model can be pretty challenging to build, but it will definitely provide a rewarding building experience whether you're a James Bond fan or not.
This collectible model features a working ejection seat, a retractable bullet shield, a tracking computer that can be concealed inside the car model's dashboard, a rotating licence plate, and pop-out machine guns that you can control by pulling back the gearstick.
When it's time for action, you can activate the ejector seat by pulling back the rear bumper, which will lift a portion of the model car's roof and eject the seat out of the car, just like in the Goldfinger movie.
The designer did a great job in using curved parts on the shoulder up to very front tip of the DB5, so you will find that the model has a lot of roundness to it. Since the model is a challenging build, it helps that LEGO has created a very concise manual to let you build moving parts and surrounding pieces in a matter of a few hours.
LEGO builders will find that the DB5 is a sturdy and robust build, with strong play features that are easy to operate. It may look just like a display model that you can show off on your desk or on a shelf, but the interactive functions actually make the model a play set or even more.
In addition to some of the basic functions of the car, the DB5 features some secret agent stuff including a secret dash that can turn into a GPS to track people you’re spying on. This GPS feature is activated through the gear piece on the side of the model. There's also a door compartment with a telephone that is used to call base, and since there's a lot of space in it, you can fit more than just a phone there.
The two stud wide door of the DB5 allows you to easily access the interior of the model as it slides open very easily. You will also find two LEGO pieces inside the trunk of the DB5 model, which you can attach to the back of the tires to turn them into shredding blades, just like what we see in the Goldfinger movie.
James Bond Aston Martin DB5 is one of the most challenging LEGO models to build, but once you start building, you’ll see a surprising amount of play options that will have you poring over the pages of the manual to finish a fun build full of nostalgia.
